Morrosquín: Yes, to responsible artisanal fishing

“The smell of salt and the refreshing breeze is a reward for the fisherman who jumps into his boat. No place in the world gives so much peace of mind”, she assures.
Julián Medina Salgado, artisanal fisherman, 50 years old, is a father of two children, business administrator and vice president of the Morrosquillo Gulf Artisanal Fishermen Corporation, Corpagolfo.

He learned the trade from his father, Juan de Dios Medina, who always wanted him to be more than just a wandering sailor. However, Julián was attracted to the feeling of freedom that he feels when he goes out to work.

That is why he left his job to meet his workmates again and accompany them in the search for conditions that dignify this trade and be their voice.

The defence and protection of the sea is a vocation that Julián has had since he learned to hook a bait in the dark, when he went fishing with his father.

For this reason, in 2012 he joined Corpagolfo as its vice president. Today he feels proud because the Corporation has managed to make the artisanal fisherman heard.

Thanks to his passion and dedication, his two children have a university education; but this is not a common denominator among his peers. “There is still a long way to go before we can live with dignity from this trade.

The impact of irresponsible and massive fishing affects us and worries us”. For this reason, Julián and the representatives of the 16 associations affiliated with Corpagolfo have strengthened their micro-entrepreneurial skills and have been trained in responsible fishing through workshops on good conservation practices, handling and distribution of fish products.

“We have learned to carry out fishing exclusively with devices such as the hook and the mesh to ensure that if the animal does not meet the conditions it is returned to the sea. I am sure that my colleagues understand that today a quality fish, fresh and with traceability, guarantees a better payment to the fisherman”.

That is why today Corpagolfo has its brand of fish and seafood with a social seal, Morrosquín, committed to responsible fishing. Morrosquin was born to promote and consolidate a strong corporation that carries out a decent commercial activity and in balance with the environment. “That is why we understand the importance of training ourselves technically and organizationally to offer the best product and service, for a demanding client who values the social contribution of a venture”, says Julian.

Thanks to the accompaniment and support of public and private entities such as Anadarko Colombia, the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority AUNAP and the ACDI/VOCA LA Foundation, today Corpagolfo has important commercial allies such as Grupo Takami and Mucho Colombia.
